In the 1970s, scientists at NASA started thinking deeply about the possibility of finding life somewhere out in the universe. They designed a number of projects, most notably The Golden Record, in a serious attempt to initiate a dialogue with an alien species. Featuring interviews with musicians including Philip Glass as well as philosophers and scientists from NASA and ESA, the film explores The Golden Record. This was born at the dawn of the personal computing revolution in an age of scientific optimism. Today, the utopian vision of limitless technological progress has been eroded by a rising awareness of the fragility of our planet. Our future and even our survival seem uncertain. In this film we interview philosophers, scientists and musicians, asking them: if we were to find an intelligent alien species, what would our message about life on planet Earth be today?
